    Kutruva Nayanar

Kutruva Nayanar is the commander who won his battles by devotion and then laid down the command — the Nayanar of victory renounced.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that Kutruva, general of the Kalar? — of his king’s armies, fought his campaigns as service to Shiva, wearing the sacred ash into battle; when the victories were complete and honors offered, he gave them to the god and to the devotees, taking the pilgrim’s staff. The tale is the canon’s portrait of power surrendered at its height.

    Legacy

His story anchors the Nayanar teaching that authority is a trust discharged toward the god.
