Kungiliya Kalaya Nayanar
Kungiliya Kalaya Nayanar is the destitute devotee whose patience was rewarded — the Nayanar of Tirukkalaiyam’s? — of the poor man’s temple service.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that Kungiliya, reduced to poverty, served the shrine of his village daily without means; when his wife sold the household’s last brass pot? — the tradition tells of trials in which his wife’s jewels and his own honor were risked for the god’s service, and of Shiva’s intervention restoring all. The tale is told as the reward that attends unwavering service through want.
Legacy
His story anchors the Nayanar teaching that poverty cannot bar devotion; the canon remembers him among the householders of the sixty-three.
