Kulachirai Nayanar
Kulachirai Nayanar is the Pandya minister who, with queen Mangayarkkarasiyar, called Sambandar to Madurai and turned the kingdom back to Shaivism.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that while the Pandya king leaned toward the Jain ascetics, Kulachirai kept the Shaiva faith at court and, with the queen, invited the child-saint to the capital. His steadfastness through the years of neglect — service without office’s rewards — is the tale’s theme; the restoration of Madurai’s temple worship is credited to the minister’s and queen’s constancy.
Legacy
He stands in the canon beside Mangayarkkarasiyar as the memory of the Pandya court’s return; processions of the 63 include him.
