    Krishnadasa Kaviraja

Krishnadasa Kaviraja (c. 1496–1600 CE) was a Bengali poet-saint and the author of the Chaitanya Charitamrita, the definitive biography and theological exposition of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

    Background

Krishnadasa Kaviraja was born in the village of Jhamatpur in Bengal. He was initiated into the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition by Raghunatha Dasa Goswami in Vrindavan. Despite his advanced age and failing eyesight, he composed his masterwork in his later years, relying on divine inspiration and the guidance of senior devotees.

    Spiritual Contribution

The Chaitanya Charitamrita is a vast Sanskrit biographical poem in three parts — Adi, Madhya, and Antya — that recounts the life and teachings of Sri Chaitanya. It is the most comprehensive and theologically nuanced account of Chaitanya’s life, preserving his inner theological teachings alongside the narrative of his public career. Krishnadasa Kaviraja also authored the Govinda Lilamrita and other devotional works.

    Legacy and Impact

The Chaitanya Charitamrita is the most widely read and authoritative biography in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. It is central to understanding Chaitanya’s theology of ecstatic devotion (prema-bhakti) and the philosophy of achintya bheda-abheda (inconceivable simultaneous difference and non-difference).

    Verification Notes

    • His dates are traditional; the period 1496–1600 is conventional.
    • The Chaitanya Charitamrita was composed late in life and is considered divinely revealed.
