    Keshav Bharati

Keshav Bharati (c. 15th century) was a Vaishnava monk who initiated Chaitanya Mahaprabhu into sannyasa (renounced order) and gave him the name Krishna Chaitanya.

    Background

Keshav Bharati was the head of a monastery (math) in Katwa, Bengal. He was a respected Vaishnava sannyasi of the Advaita tradition. When Chaitanya Mahaprabhu desired to take formal renunciation, he chose Keshav Bharati as his guru, recognizing his spiritual authority.

    Spiritual Contribution

Keshav Bharati initiated Chaitanya Mahaprabhu into the sannyasa order, giving him the name Krishna Chaitanya. This initiation was a pivotal moment in the establishment of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, as it formalized Chaitanya’s role as a renounced teacher. Keshav Bharati’s own lineage represented the traditional Advaita sannyasa order.

    Legacy and Impact

The sannyasa initiation by Keshav Bharati connected the new Vaishnava movement to the established sannyasa tradition, giving it legitimacy and authority. The Katwa monastery remained an important center of Vaishnava worship.
