Karuvoorar (Karuvoor Thevar)
Karuvoorar (करुवूरर्), also known as Karuvoor Thevar or Karuvurar, is a Tamil Siddhar included in standard lists of the eighteen Siddhars. Tradition associates him with the Chola engineering and astrology traditions, and legend describes him as guru and counsellor to the Chola king Karikala.
Tradition
Siddhar chronology is traditional rather than historical, and the dating of Karuvoorar varies: legend connects him with Karikala Chola, an early Chola ruler, while some traditions place him around the tenth century. The name suggests an origin at Karur in Tamil Nadu, and accounts describe him as a devotee of Shiva versed in temple planning, sculpture, and astrology. Tamil verses in the Siddha corpus are attributed to him, though such attributions reflect lineage practice rather than documented authorship.
Teachings/Contributions
In Siddha lore Karuvoorar is remembered for practical arts joined to spiritual discipline: the astrology attributed to him served royal and temple affairs, and the engineering traditions associated with his name belong to the broader Siddha engagement with architecture, metallurgy, and medicine. Devotional poetry attributed to him emphasizes the worship of Shiva and the perfected body attained through yoga.
Legacy
Karuvoorar is counted among the eighteen Siddhars in encyclopedic lists such as the Abithana Chintamani, and also figures in navagraha-associated lists of Siddhars. Shrines and memorial spots connected with him receive veneration, and his name remains attached to the lore of Chola-era craftsmanship.
