    Kamalamuni

Kamalamuni (कमलमुनि) is a Tamil Siddhar counted in standard lists of the eighteen Siddhars of the Tamil tradition. He is associated in tradition with kaya kalpa — the Siddha regimen for preserving and renewing the body — and with medicine.

    Tradition

Siddhar chronology is traditional rather than historical, and no independent records establish Kamalamuni’s dates or biography. Some Siddha lists identify him with Kalangi Nathar, the teacher traditionally credited as the guru of the Siddhar Bhogar, while other accounts treat them as separate figures, and a minority of writers even associate the name with distant traditions outside India. Such identifications are hagiographic and vary between sources. Works on medicine and rejuvenation circulate in the Siddha corpus under Kamalamuni’s name, though these attributions reflect lineage practice rather than documented authorship.

    Teachings/Contributions

The tradition remembers Kamalamuni chiefly for kaya kalpa: practices combining herbal and mineral preparations, breath control, and discipline intended to retard aging and perfect the body as a vehicle of realization. This concern with longevity is a hallmark of the Siddha path, in which physical well-being and spiritual progress are treated as a single program. Medical material attributed to him belongs to the same corpus of Siddha formulations and treatments.

    Legacy

Kamalamuni appears in encyclopedic enumerations of the eighteen Siddhars, including the Abithana Chintamani, and is venerated alongside the other Siddhars at shrines such as Sathuragiri and other Siddhar-associated sites in Tamil Nadu.

    Verification notes

    • Siddhar chronology is traditional, not historical; identifications with Kalangi Nathar are hagiographic and disputed between lists.
    • Attributed works are corpus texts of uncertain date and authorship.
