Jiva Goswami
Jiva Goswami (c. 1513–1598) was a Vaishnava theologian and philosopher, the nephew of Rupa and Sanatana Goswami, and one of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan.
Background
Born in Bengal, Jiva Goswami studied under his uncles Rupa and Sanatana Goswami. He became the chief architect of Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy and spent most of his life in Vrindavan. He was appointed by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to preserve and systematize the teachings of the tradition.
Spiritual Contribution
Jiva Goswami authored the Sat-sandarbha (Six Philosophical Treatises), a systematic presentation of Gaudiya Vaishnava theology. He defended the philosophy against rival interpretations and established the achintya-bhedabheda (inconceivable simultaneous difference and non-difference) framework. His Bhagavata-sandarbha is a comprehensive commentary on the Srimad Bhagavatam.
Legacy and Impact
The Sandarbha series became the philosophical foundation of the Hare Krishna movement and the wider Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. His rigorous philosophical method ensured the intellectual integrity of the tradition.
