Janabai
Janabai (c. 13th–14th century) was the woman Varkari saint of Pandharpur — a household servant (das) whose abhangs on Vithoba’s domestic intimacy are among Marathi bhakti’s most tender poems.
Background
Born in Gangakhed (Marathwada); after her parents’ death she became a servant in Namdev’s family household at Pandharpur — her guru and lifelong companion in devotion; the Varkari tradition counts her among Namdev’s innermost circle.
Spiritual Contribution
The abhang corpus (300+ attributed) speaking as Vithoba’s maidservant (the dasi idiom — Vithoba himself helps her grind grain, per the legends); the frankness of her low-caste servant’s voice in devotional literature; her role in the sant-bhakti chain (the Varkari lineage-lists include her).
Legacy and Impact
Among the “four” great women Varkari saints (with Muktabai, Kanhopatra, Bahinabai); her abhangs are sung on the Wari; the Janabai tradition at Pandharpur (her samadhi-memorial in the temple’s orbit) is visited by pilgrims.
