Jamgon Kongtrul
Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye (1813–1899) was a Tibetan polymath, scholar, and one of the most important figures of the Rime (non-sectarian) movement.
Background
Born in Kham, eastern Tibet, Kongtrul was recognized as a reincarnation of Jamgon Ju Mipham’s disciple. He was educated in multiple traditions and became a master of Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and Gelug teachings. He was a close collaborator of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo.
Spiritual Contribution
Kongtrul compiled the Rinchen Terdzo (Treasury of Precious Termas), a massive collection of over 3,000 terma teachings from across all Tibetan Buddhist traditions. He also authored the Five Treasuries, an encyclopedic body of work covering Buddhist philosophy, meditation, history, and practice. He revived numerous lineages of teaching that were in danger of being lost.
Legacy and Impact
His encyclopedic compilations preserved teachings from nearly all Tibetan Buddhist schools and became indispensable reference works. The Rime movement he helped lead prevented sectarian homogenization and preserved the diversity of Tibetan Buddhist practice.
