Devardhi
Devardhi (also known as Devardhi Kshamashramana) (c. 5th century CE) was the Jain monk who presided over the final compilation of the Jain Agamas at the Council of Valabhi.
Background
Devardhi led the Council of Valabhi (also called the Council of Baddavaha) in Gujarat, where Jain monks gathered to compile and codify the Jain scriptures that had been scattered and threatened with loss. He presided over a gathering of over 500 monks.
Spiritual Contribution
Under Devardhi’s leadership, the Jain Agamas (canonical texts) were finally written down in their current form. The council standardized the Shvetambara canon and ensured its preservation for future generations. His compilation work saved much of the Jain scriptural heritage from disappearing.
Legacy and Impact
The codification of the Jain Agamas under Devardhi’s direction became the foundation of Shvetambara Jain textual tradition. Without this council, much of Jain literature and philosophy might have been lost. The Valabhi compilation remains the standard canon for Shvetambara Jains.
