    Jaidev

Jaidev (Jayadeva) is the author of the Gita Govinda — the great Sanskrit song-cycle of Radha and Krishna — whose hymns also stand in the Guru Granth Sahib among the bhagats.

    Life

Born at Kenduli in Bengal (the Odisha claim centers on his devotion at Puri’s Jagannath temple), Jaidev served the Jagannath temple as poet; the legend of Krishna himself dictating the Gita Govinda’s closing verse (“dehi pada-pallavam”) is the temple’s beloved tale.

    Teachings/Works

The Gita Govinda’s twenty-four? — its twenty-four? — its twelve? — safe: its chapters (sargas) of ashtapadis (eight-verse songs) sing Radha’s longing and union in metres and modes that defined Indian music’s raga repertoire; “Lalita lavanga” and “Chandana charchita” remain sung across India. In the Guru Granth Sahib his bani appears under “Jaidev.”

    Legacy

The Gita Govinda is the summit of Sanskrit love-mysticism — danced (Odissi and other classical traditions), painted (the Pahari and Rajasthani series), sung daily at Jagannath; his presence in the Granth makes him shared scripture of Sikhs and Vaishnavas alike.

    Verification notes

    • The Gita Govinda and Granth hymns are secure; his biography is thin and his dates debated (12th century consensus).
