    Gyaltsab Je

Gyaltsab Je (1364–1432) was a Tibetan Gelug scholar and the first Ganden Tripa (throne holder) after Tsongkhapa.

    Background

Born in Tsang, Tibet, Gyaltsab Je (Darma Rinchen) studied extensively under Tsongkhapa and became one of his foremost disciples. He was a prolific commentator on Madhyamaka philosophy and authored detailed commentaries on Nagarjuna’s works. He held the position of Ganden Tripa, succeeding Tsongkhapa as head of the Gelug tradition.

    Spiritual Contribution

Gyaltsab Je systematized Tsongkhapa’s interpretation of Madhyamaka emptiness, particularly in his commentary on Nagarjuna’s Mulamadhyamakakarika. He wrote the influential Rim lnga chen mo (Five Stages of Mantra) on Guhyasamaja tantra, and his sGron gsal clarified the Pramana (epistemology) tradition as transmitted through Tsongkhapa.

    Legacy and Impact

His commentaries became foundational texts in the Gelug monastic curriculum, shaping generations of scholars. He is particularly revered for establishing the philosophical framework that Tsongkhapa’s students used to understand the relationship between Madhyamaka and tantra.
