    Gunaprabha

Gunaprabha (6th century CE) was an Indian Buddhist monk and one of the most important Vinaya (monastic discipline) masters in the history of Indian Buddhism.

    Background

Gunaprabha was born in India and studied at the great Buddhist monastery of Nalanda, where he became a leading authority on the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya tradition. He lived during a period when the study of monastic discipline was being systematized across Indian Buddhist institutions.

    Spiritual Contribution

Gunaprabha authored the Vinayasūtra, a comprehensive summary and analysis of the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya that became the standard reference work for Vinaya studies across the Buddhist world. His work organized the complex body of monastic rules into a systematic and accessible format, covering topics from ordination procedures to the handling of monastic property.

    Legacy and Impact

Gunaprabha’s Vinayasūtra was transmitted to Tibet, where it became one of the foundational texts of Tibetan Buddhist monasticism. The work influenced the development of monastic discipline across Central and East Asia and remains an important reference for scholars of Buddhist institutional history.
