Gautama Maharishi
Gautama Maharishi is a Rig Vedic seer counted among the Saptarishi in several lists. He is the husband of Ahalya in the epic and Puranic traditions and the seer whose curse and its reversal form one of the Ramayana’s best-known episodes.
Tradition/Life
Hymns of the Rig Veda and later Samhitas are attributed to Gautama’s line. The Ramayana tells that Gautama’s wife Ahalya was deceived by Indra, and that the sage’s curse turned her to stone until Rama’s arrival at the hermitage restored her — a narrative central to bhakti readings of grace. The Puranas connect him with the founding of hermitages in the Godavari region (Brahmagiri near Trimbakeshwar in later tradition).
Teachings/Works
Hymns attributed to his family appear in the Rig Veda; later Nyaya literature is attributed to a different, much later sage named Gautama (Aksapada), and the two should not be conflated.
Legacy
The Gautama gotra is widespread; Ahalya’s release is a standard subject of temple narrative sculpture.
Verification notes
- Vedic seer, epic husband, and Puranic patriarch are layered traditions; no single historical figure underlies them.
