Eripatha Nayanar
Eripatha Nayanar is the guardian of the fords — the young Nayanar who kept the river crossing safe for Shiva’s devotees and gave his life for the rule.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that Eripatha of Pugaliyur patrolled the crossing where devotees passed to the shrine, punishing any who troubled them. When a royal servitor hauled sacred flowers by the road and refused deference, Eripatha slew him — an act that, by the king’s order, brought his own execution; Shiva stayed the sentence, revealing the youth’s service as the god’s own policing. The tale marks the canon’s protection of the devotee’s way.
Legacy
His story is told as the sanctity of the pilgrim’s road; the shrine associations at Pugaliyur commemorate him.
