    Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche was one of the great Tibetan masters of the 20th century — a Nyingma lineage-holder who became teacher to the Dalai Lama, the Bhutanese royal family, and a generation of Western students, and who rebuilt the mind? — rebuilt Tibetan monastic life in exile.

    Life

Recognized as the mind-incarnation? — as the incarnation of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, he trained across all four Tibetan schools (a rarity), studied with the greatest masters of his era, and after 1959 carried the lineage into exile — rebuilding Shechen Monastery in Nepal, serving as head of the Nyingma, and teaching in Bhutan (royal preceptor) and the West (Naropa? — his visits seeded the Western sangha).

    Teachings/Works

His collected works fill some twenty-five volumes: commentaries, terma cycles, and poetry. His teaching style — the nonsectarian (rimé) synthesis, Dzogchen pointing-out instructions, and devoted practice (he spent years in retreat) — defined the refugee era’s Tibetan Buddhism. Films of his teaching (The Spirit of Tibet) carried him to global audiences.

    Legacy

His reincarnation was recognized in Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche (b. 1993); the Shechen institutions in Nepal, India, and the West continue his work.
