    Dhanvantari

Dhanvantari (धन्वन्तरि) is the physician of the gods in Hindu mythology, revered as an incarnation of Vishnu and worshipped as the patron of Ayurveda. He is also counted in some Tamil Siddha lists among the eighteen Siddhars.

    Tradition

Dhanvantari’s principal legend is mythological rather than historical. In the account of the churning of the ocean of milk related in the Puranas, he emerged bearing the amrita kalasha, the pot of nectar of immortality, and is accordingly venerated as an incarnation of Vishnu. Puranic and later tradition also describes an earthly Dhanvantari, a physician-king who taught the science of medicine to humanity. Tamil Siddha lists, including enumerations of the eighteen Siddhars, include Dhanvantari among their masters, absorbing the divine physician into the Siddha lineage of healers. No independent historical records exist for either figure.

    Teachings/Contributions

Dhanvantari is remembered as the fountainhead of Indian medical learning. As patron of Ayurveda he is credited in tradition with the knowledge of diagnosis, herbal and mineral preparations, and surgery; texts of the Ayurvedic and Siddha corpora are attributed to his name. In Siddha usage, his legend authorizes the medical dimension of the tradition, joining divine healing to the work of the physician.

    Legacy

Dhanvantari is worshipped in temples across India, and Dhanvantari Jayanti is observed as a festival honoring the divine physician. In Siddha and Ayurvedic practice his name remains the emblem of the healing profession.
