    Dhammapala (Buddhist Commentator)

Dhammapala (5th-6th century CE) was an Indian Buddhist monk and commentator who composed important sub-commentaries (tika) on the Pali commentaries of Buddhaghosa.

    Background

Dhammapala was born in the region of Kancipuram in South India. He received ordination in the Theravada tradition and studied extensively under accomplished masters. He became proficient in the Pali Tipitaka and the commentarial tradition.

    Spiritual Contribution

Dhammapala authored sub-commentaries on several of Buddhaghosa’s works, including the Sammohavinodanī and the Paramatthajotikā. His writings clarify and expand upon the earlier commentarial tradition. He is particularly known for his detailed analysis of the Jataka commentaries.

    Legacy and Impact

Dhammapala’s sub-commentaries remain important reference works in Theravada Buddhist scholarship. They bridge the gap between Buddhaghosa’s era and later periods of Buddhist learning in South and Southeast Asia.
