    Dandi Adigal Nayanar

Dandi Adigal Nayanar is the blind devotee who dug the temple tank at Tiruvarur by feel — and whose sight the god restored.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that Dandi Adigal, born blind, undertook the digging of the great tank at Tiruvarur, guiding himself by his staff and by the sound of water. When the local chief obstructed the work, the saint’s perseverance and the god’s intervention carried it through; on the tank’s completion, Shiva is said to have opened his eyes. The tale is the canon’s emblem of service performed past disability.

    Legacy

The Tiruvarur tank (Kamalalayam) remains among the largest temple tanks of the south; his story is told wherever perseverance in service is praised.
