Cheraman Perumal Nayanar
Cheraman Perumal Nayanar is the Chera king — the friend of Sundarar — who ruled by the devotee’s dharma and died marching north with his friend into the god’s presence.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that the Perumal of the Chera line served Shiva’s servants, met Sundarar in vision and in person, and maintained a friendship sealed in hymns — each saint calling the other to his feasts. When Sundarar was called to Kailash, the king mounted his elephant and rode with him; both are said to have entered the god’s presence together. The tale is the canon’s portrait of kingship as discipleship.
Legacy
Kerala’s memory of Cheraman Perumal is layered (the same name carries the legend of the king who Islam’s prophet met? — a separate, contested tradition); the Nayanar Perumal is honored in the canon’s lists.
