    Charandas

Charandas (c. 17th–18th century) was a Rajasthani saint and poet in the Bhakti tradition, known for his devotional compositions and his association with the Ravidasi and egalitarian spiritual movements of Rajasthan.

    Background

Charandas lived in Rajasthan during the 17th or 18th century. He belonged to the Chamar (leather-worker) community and, like Ravidas, challenged caste discrimination through his poetry and spiritual practice. He is believed to have been a disciple in the lineage of Ravidas.

    Spiritual Contribution

Charandas composed devotional songs and poems in Rajasthani and Braj Bhasha, expressing themes of divine love, social equality, and the rejection of caste-based discrimination. He emphasized direct personal devotion to God as the path to liberation, bypassing the intermediary role of Brahmin priests.

    Legacy and Impact

Charandas’s compositions are preserved in the Ravidasi tradition and continue to be sung in devotional gatherings. He contributed to the egalitarian spiritual movements that challenged caste hierarchy in medieval Rajasthan.
