    Bhāskararāya

Bhāskararāya (भास्कराराय, 1690–1785) was a Shri Vidya master and Sanskrit scholar who authored the Saubhāgya Bhāskara, the most widely used commentary on the Lalita Sahasranamalita-deity) Sahasranama. He is regarded as one of the foremost authorities on Shri Vidya tradition in Maharashtra.

    Life/History

Bhāskararāya was born in 1690 into a Maharashtrian Brahmin family — Wikipedia records his birthplace as Hyderabad, Telangana, though some traditions name the village of Puntambe in Maharashtra. He received a thorough education in Sanskrit, Vedanta, and the tantric traditions, and became initiated into the Shri Vidya tradition. He was later honored at the Maratha court at Tanjore, where he settled in Tamil Nadu.

    Teachings/Contributions

Bhāskararāya is the attributed author of more than 40 writings. His masterwork on the Goddess is the Saubhāgya Bhāskara — a detailed, verse-by-verse commentary on the Lalita Sahasranama, the thousand-name hymn of the Goddess Lalita (Tripurasundari), completed in 1728. He also wrote:

    • Setubandha — a technical treatise on Tantric practice (his magnum opus, per Wikipedia), a commentary on a portion of the Vāmakeśvara-tantra dealing with the worship of Tripurasundari, completed in 1733 or 1741
    • Varivasya Rahasya — a 167-śloka work on the Śrī Vidyā mantra and worship, with his own commentary (Prakāśa)
    • Guptavatī — a commentary on the Devī Māhātmya
    • Bālabodha — an introductory work on Shakta practice
    • Commentaries on the Tripurā and Bhāvanā Upanishads, and the Khadyota commentary on the Ganesha Sahasranama

    Legacy

The Saubhāgya Bhāskara is the standard commentary on the Lalita Sahasranama, used by Shri Vidya practitioners worldwide. Bhāskararāya is honored as one of the great scholars of the Shakta tradition, and his works continue to be studied in traditional and academic settings. He is regarded as a key figure in the transmission of Shri Vidya from the medieval to the modern period.
