Bharadvaja
Bharadvaja is a great seer of the Rig Veda; the sixth book of the collection is attributed to his family. In the epics he is the teacher of seers and the father of Drona, the martial preceptor of the Pandavas and Kauravas.
Tradition/Life
The Vedic hymns present Bharadvaja as a seer of long life and devotion, “master of plentiful wealth of prayer.” The Mahabharata locates his hermitage at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna (Prayaga), where Rama’s party receives hospitality during the forest exile. The Puranas make him son of Brihaspati? — genealogies vary — and count him among the Saptarishi in several manvantara lists.
Teachings/Works
Beyond Book 6 of the Rig Veda, an Ayurvedic compendium (the Bharadvaja Samhita) and portions of Dhanurveda (the science of archery) are attributed to his line. The Arthashastra tradition also names him among royal preceptors.
Legacy
The Bharadvaja gotra remains among the most widespread Brahmin lineages; his hermitage at Prayagraj is a pilgrimage site.
