    Apputhi Adigal

Apputhi Adigal is the householder who built institutions in another’s name — schools, tanks, and rest-houses all dedicated to Appar, whom he had never seen.

    Life/Legend

The hagiography relates that Apputhi of Thingalur heard of Appar’s service and made the saint’s name his own institution’s: he named his sons “Appar’s servants,” sank tanks in the name, fed travelers in the name. When Appar at last came to the village, the meeting — the founder discovering his own householder — is the tale’s joy; the saint blessed the works he had unknowingly inspired. When Apputhi’s son died of a serpent’s bite in service, Appar’s prayer restored him.

    Legacy

His story anchors the Nayanar teaching of named service — devotion that builds visible institutions.
