Amaraneedi Nayanar
Amaraneedi Nayanar is the merchant-saint whose gold given in devotion was returned a hundredfold — the Nayanar legend of the treasure that follows the gift.
Life/Legend
The hagiography relates that Amaraneedi of Pazhaiyarai fed devotees from his wealth and weighed his own body’s gold against the gift? — his trading ventures prospered in measure as he gave. When pirates took his ships and he stood ruined before the god, the tradition says the sea itself returned his vessels laden with treasure. The tale is told as the working of grace behind honest commerce.
Legacy
Merchant communities of the Tamil coast claimed his patronage; his story anchors the Nayanar teaching that giving impoverishes nothing.
