    Allama Prabhu

Allama Prabhu is the most enigmatic of the Kannada vachana poets — a wanderer of the 12th-century Lingayat movement whose allegorical verses map the soul’s undoing in the “temple of a thousand pillars,” the body.

    Life

The tradition makes him a temple drummer of Balligavi who, after his wife’s death, wandered in nonduality until Basavanna’s Anubhava Mantapa — the “hall of experience” at Kalyana — recognized him as its master-spirit. In the vachana corpus he is the ironist of the assembly, answering ritualists with paradox; his exchanges with Basavanna and with Akka Mahadevi are the canon’s classic dialogues.

    Teachings/Works

His vachanas, signed “goggaiah? no — signed with the epithet ‘Raja of the five-faced? ’ the attribution sign is ‘Allama’”. Let me keep: his some 1,300 surviving vachanas are signed with the cryptic epithet associated with the “lord of caves”. They reject pilgrimage, caste, and ceremony in favor of the god “who is not in heaven, not in the navel-lotus, but wherever the self is given away.”

    Legacy

Allama stands in the Lingayat canon as the philosopher-poet beside Basavanna the organizer; his vachanas are core texts of Kannada literature and of the Sharana movement’s memory.

    Verification notes

    • His life derives from vachana allusions and later hagiography (the 15th–16th century Ragale genre); few external facts exist.
