    Siddhasena

Siddhasena Divakara (c. 5th–6th century CE) was a Jain philosopher and logician who authored the Nyāyāvatāra and the Sanmati-prakaraṇa, foundational texts of Jain logic.

    Background

Siddhasena was born into a Brahmin family in the Gujarat region and later became a Jain monk. He studied Nyaya (logic) and Jain philosophy extensively, eventually becoming one of the most important philosophers of the Digambara school. He is sometimes identified with Siddhasena Navakari.

    Spiritual Contribution

His Nyāyāvatāra is a concise treatise on Jain logic and epistemology (Pramāṇa and naya theory), and his Sanmati-prakaraṇa explores the nature of the soul and the many-natured (anekānta) reality. His works defended Jain philosophy against Buddhist and Hindu philosophical challenges.

    Legacy and Impact

The Nyāyāvatāra is a foundational text of Jain logic and remains a standard work in Jain philosophical education. His logical contributions helped establish Jain philosophy as a rigorous intellectual tradition comparable to the Nyaya and Buddhist schools.
