    Yoganidrasana (Yoga Sleep Pose)

Yoganidrasana is an advanced seated asana in Hatha Yoga.

    Overview

Yoganidrasana, or Yoga Sleep Pose, is an advanced forward fold where the legs are crossed behind the head while lying on the back. The name comes from Sanskrit “yoga” meaning union, “nidra” meaning sleep, and “asana” meaning seat. Despite the name suggesting rest, this is an intensely deep hip opener and forward fold.

    Method/Content

Starting from a seated position, the practitioner crosses the legs and draws them behind the head, with each ankle crossing behind the opposite side of the neck. The hands may clasp behind the back or hold the feet. The torso folds forward, bringing the forehead toward or beyond the feet. The pose requires exceptional hip flexibility, hamstring length, and spinal mobility. The practitioner maintains steady breathing while holding this deep fold.

    Purpose/Benefits

Yoganidrasana provides an extremely deep stretch to the hips, hamstrings, and spine. It stimulates the abdominal organs, compresses the thyroid gland, and is believed to calm the nervous system. The pose is said to promote deep relaxation and meditative awareness, hence the association with yogic sleep.
