Yoga Upaniṣads
The Yoga Upaniṣads are a group of Upaniṣads related to Yoga — twenty in the Muktikā anthology of 108 Upaniṣads — that systematize and present the teachings of Yoga philosophy within the Upaniṣadic framework. They are classified apart from the ancient principal Upaniṣads and draw upon the earlier Yogic teachings found in the principal Upaniṣads and the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali.
Overview
This collection includes numerous texts such as the Yoga Tattva Upaniṣad, Yoga Kundalinī Upaniṣad, Dhyanabindu Upaniṣad, and others. They present detailed teachings on yogic practices including āsana, prāṇāyāma, mudrā, bandha, and meditation techniques.
Content
The Yoga Upaniṣads provide comprehensive instructions on the practice of Yoga, including the awakening of kuṇḍalinī energy, the practices of haṭha yoga, the stages of meditation (dhyāna), and the attainment of samādhi. They also discuss the philosophical foundations of Yoga and its relationship to Vedāntic philosophy, presenting Yoga as a practical path to the realization of Brahman.
Significance
The Yoga Upaniṣads are significant for their detailed and practical approach to spiritual development. They bridge the gap between the philosophical teachings of the earlier Upaniṣads and the practical techniques of classical Yoga. These texts have been foundational for the haṭha yoga tradition and continue to influence modern yoga practice.
Verification notes
