    Yoga in Jyotiṣa

In Jyotiṣa, the term “yoga” denotes specific planetary combinations—configurations of two or more grahas whose conjunction, aspect, or positional relationship produces a recognizable effect on the native’s life. Hundreds of yogas are catalogued in classical texts, ranging from Rāja Yogas (indicating power and authority) to Dhana Yogas (indicating wealth) and Nipuṇa Yogas (indicating skill or cleverness).

Each yoga is defined by precise conditions: the signs occupied, the houses governed, the planets involved, and whether the configuration is formed by conjunction, aspect, or dispositon. The same planets can produce vastly different outcomes depending on these contextual factors, making yoga analysis one of the most nuanced branches of chart interpretation.

    Origins

Yoga classification begins in the Bṛhat Parāśara Horāśāstra, which enumerates fundamental combinations. Later texts such as the Jātaka Pārijāta, Sārāvalī, and Phala Dīpikā expanded the catalogue significantly. Regional traditions and individual authors contributed specialised yogas, producing a vast and sometimes contradictory literature that practitioners must navigate carefully.

    Practice/Methodology

Identification requires examining all nine planets’ sign placements, house lordships, and mutual relationships. A yoga’s strength depends on the dignity (exaltation, own sign, debilitation) of participating planets, the houses they rule, and whether benefic or malefic influences modify the combination. Practitioners assess yogas within the context of daśā periods to time their manifestation.

    Modern status

Yoga analysis remains central to Jyotiṣa practice and is a primary focus of intermediate and advanced study. The proliferation of online resources has made yoga knowledge widely accessible, though the depth of classical learning required for accurate application is often underestimated by casual practitioners.

    Verification notes

Yoga theory is internally coherent within the Jyotiṣa framework, but its predictive claims lack empirical validation. The sheer number of defined yogas—some sources catalogue over 300—raises questions about unfalsifiability. The tradition’s authority rests on centuries of practitioner consensus rather than controlled testing.
