Vindhyachal Temple
The Vindhyavasini temple at Vindhyachal on the Ganga near Mirzapur is the shrine of the goddess who, in the Devi-centered telling of the Krishna story, received the newborn — the child who slipped from Devaki’s hands and manifested at the Vindhya’s foot as Yogmaya.
Significance
The goddess Vindhyavasini (she who dwells in the Vindhyas) is counted among the Shakti Pithas in regional lists; the temple anchors the famous triangular pilgrimage (trikon parikrama) of Vindhyavasini–Kali Khoh–Ashtabhuja, three goddesses in one circuit. The Vindhya’s own legend — the mountain that grew until humbled by the sages’ circling — gives the region its mythic frame.
History
The site’s lore ties to the Mahabharata’s and Puranas’ Vindhya-vasini; the temple’s fabric is early modern with continuous renewal.
Modern status
One of North India’s best-attended Devi shrines, especially in Navaratri; the town’s economy is the pilgrimage’s.
