Vikriti
Vikriti is the Ayurvedic term for the current state of dosha imbalance in an individual, measured against their baseline Prakriti.
Overview
Vikriti represents the deviation from one’s natural constitution due to lifestyle, diet, environmental factors, stress, or disease. While Prakriti is the birth blueprint, Vikriti is the present reality of one’s health state. Ayurvedic diagnosis focuses on identifying Vikriti to determine the nature and extent of dosha imbalance causing disease. Treatment aims to restore Vikriti to alignment with Prakriti.
Method/Content
Vikriti is determined through the same diagnostic methods used for Prakriti—pulse reading, tongue analysis, physical examination, and symptom assessment—but with emphasis on current deviations from baseline. For example, a Pitta-dominant person who develops Vata excess will show symptoms like constipation, anxiety, and dry skin despite their normally oily, fiery constitution. Vikriti assessment includes evaluating Ama (toxin accumulation), Agni (digestive fire), and the state of Dhatus (body tissues). Chronic Vikriti, if uncorrected, progresses through seven stages of disease development (Saptakriya Kala).
Purpose/Benefits
Accurate Vikriti assessment is essential for correct Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment selection. It helps practitioners distinguish between the disease process and the underlying constitution, ensuring treatments address the imbalance without disturbing the natural balance. Regular Vikriti monitoring tracks treatment efficacy and disease progression.
