    The Vedas

The Vedas are the oldest layer of Sanskrit religious literature: four collections — Ṛgveda, Yajurveda, Sāmaveda, and Atharvaveda — preserved for centuries through an exacting oral transmission system before ever being written down.

    Structure

Each Veda has four subdivisions: the Saṃhitās (mantras and benedictions), the Brāhmaṇas (commentaries on rituals and sacrifices), the Āraṇyakas (ritual and symbolic expositions), and the Upaniṣads (meditation, philosophy, and spiritual knowledge).

    Transmission

The oral preservation system — systematic recitation patterns designed so that errors self-announce — is itself considered a cultural achievement of the first order.
