Vāmana Purāṇa
The Vāmana Purāṇa is one of the eighteen major Purāṇas, devoted to the Vāmana (dwarf) avatāra of Vishnu and his subjugation of the demon king Bali.
Overview
The text contains approximately 10,000 verses and narrates the story of Vishnu’s incarnation as a dwarf Brahmin boy who recovers the three worlds from the benevolent but overreaching demon king Bali through three strides. It also contains extensive material on Shaiva worship and mythology.
Content and Structure
The Vāmana Purāṇa recounts the myth of the Vāmana avatāra in detail, including the story of Bali’s sacrifice and Vishnu’s deception. The text also contains sections on the worship of Shiva, descriptions of sacred sites (including Varanasi and Gayā), and instructions for various rituals. It includes hymns and prayers to both Vishnu and Shiva.
Significance
The text is significant for its development of the Vāmana avatāra theology and its preservation of the Bali mythology, which is central to the Onam festival in Kerala. It also reflects the syncretic tendency of later Purāṇas by combining Vaiṣṇava and Shaiva material.
