    Vamakeshvara Tantra

The Vamakeshvara Tantra is the liturgical root-text of the Shri Vidya tradition — the dialogue in which the goddess Kameshvari questions Shiva (Vamakeshvara, “the beautiful left-facing lord”) and receives the complete worship of Lalita.

    Content

The text’s chapters cover the Shri Chakra’s construction and the navavarana worship (the nine enclosures and their deities), the initiation of the worthy, the daily and occasional rites, the mantras of the goddess (the fifteen- and sixteen-syllable vidyas), and the philosophical frame — the goddess as consciousness itself. Amritananda’s 14th-century commentary (the Kalpalata? — the Saubhagyodaya? — the gloss tradition culminating in his notes) fixed its received reading; Bhaskararaya’s later works assume its categories.

    Significance

With the Yogini Hridaya the Vamakeshvara forms the twin source of Shri Vidya praxis: virtually every living line — Bhaskararaya’s, the South Indian temples’, Devipuram’s — grounds its ritual in this dialogue. It is the reason Shri Vidya’s worship has a reproducible liturgy.
