Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana (Extended Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose)

Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana is a standing balancing asana in Hatha Yoga.

    Overview

Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana, or Extended Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose, is a challenging standing balance that requires strength, flexibility, and concentration. The name comes from Sanskrit “utthita” meaning extended, “hasta” meaning hand, “padangustha” meaning big toe, and “asana” meaning seat.

    Method/Content

Standing tall on the left leg with the knee slightly micro-bent, the practitioner lifts the right knee toward the chest and grasps the right big toe with the first two fingers and thumb of the right hand. The right leg is then extended forward, straightening the knee while maintaining a strong standing leg. The left arm extends to the side or rests on the hip for balance. The spine remains erect with the chest open and the gaze fixed on a single point. The pose may be held for five to ten breaths before releasing and repeating on the opposite side.

    Purpose/Benefits

This pose strengthens the legs, ankles, and core while stretching the hamstrings and calves. It improves balance, concentration, and mental focus. The pose stimulates the abdominal organs and is believed to improve digestion and eliminate toxins from the body.
