Utkatasana
Utkatasana is a standing yoga posture, also known as the fierce or chair pose.
Overview
Utkatasana, meaning “fierce posture” or “powerful posture,” is a standing asana where the practitioner lowers the hips as if sitting in an invisible chair. It builds strength and endurance in the legs and core.
Method/Content
The practitioner stands with feet together, raises the arms overhead, and bends the knees to lower the hips as if sitting in a chair. The weight shifts toward the heels, the spine remains long, and the chest stays open. The thighs work to approach parallel with the floor. The posture is held for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Purpose/Benefits
Utkatasana strengthens the thighs, hips, ankles, and core muscles. It improves balance and stamina while stimulating the heart and diaphragm. The posture is said to generate internal heat, improve digestion, and energize the body.
