    Upekkha

Upekkha (Equanimity) is one of the four immeasurable mental states in Buddhism, the practice of maintaining mental balance amid all conditions.

    Overview

Upekkha is the balanced awareness that remains unaffected by pleasure and pain, gain and loss, praise and blame. It is cultivated through meditation.

    Philosophical Context

In Buddhist philosophy, upekkha counters attachment and aversion. It is the crowning quality among the four immeasurables, providing stability to the other three.

    Interpretations

Upekkha is not indifference but a balanced, clear awareness. It allows one to respond to situations with wisdom rather than reactive emotion.
