Uddiyana Bandha Mudra
Uddiyana Bandha Mudra is a bandha (lock) involving the abdominal lift in Hatha Yoga.
Overview
Uddiyana Bandha Mudra refers to the specific practice of engaging the uddiyana bandha as a mudra. Uddiyana means “to fly upward” and describes the upward movement of prana achieved through this practice. It is one of the three classical bandhas.
Method/Content
The practitioner stands with knees slightly bent, exhales completely, and draws the abdomen inward and upward under the rib cage. The diaphragm rises into the thoracic cavity, creating a vacuum. The breath is held externally while maintaining the lock. The practice is held for as long as comfortable before releasing and inhaling. It may also be practiced in seated positions.
Purpose/Benefits
Uddiyana Bandha is said to awaken prana and direct it upward through the sushumna nadi. It massages the abdominal organs, improves digestion, and strengthens the core. The practice is also believed to activate manipura chakra and increase internal heat.
