Transcendental Meditation Research
Summary
Transcendental Meditation (TM) has generated one of the largest research portfolios among meditation techniques, with an estimated 600 peer-reviewed studies, many conducted with small samples. Founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, TM has been investigated for cardiovascular health, stress reduction, and cognitive outcomes. The technique’s standardization facilitates cross-study comparison.
Key findings
An American Heart Association scientific statement (2013) concluded that TM may be considered for lowering blood pressure, an effect comparable with other lifestyle interventions. A randomized trial in patients with coronary heart disease reported reductions in a composite of cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Reported physiological effects include reduced cortisol, improved baroreflex sensitivity, and altered EEG coherence patterns, though many such findings await robust independent replication. Meta-analyses suggest TM reduces anxiety roughly comparably to other relaxation techniques; claims of improved creativity rest on weaker evidence.
Methodology
TM research employs RCTs, systematic reviews, and longitudinal cohort studies. The technique is standardized (20 minutes, twice daily), enabling consistency. Outcomes span cardiovascular measures, cortisol, EEG, and psychological scales. The Maharishi University of Management has produced much of the early research, with independent replication growing.
Criticism / Limitations
Early studies from affiliated institutions raised concerns about allegiance effects. Sample sizes in some trials were small. The requirement for formal instruction creates barriers to scalability. Most studies lack active control groups.
Verification notes
Independent replication of blood pressure effects has strengthened the evidence base. AHA concluded TM “may be considered” a reasonable adjunct to conventional blood pressure management, not a full endorsement. Research continues through independent academic institutions worldwide.
