    Tirumantiram

The Tirumantiram (“Sacred Mantra”) of Tirumular is the foundational text of Tamil Shaiva Siddhanta — a synthesis of yoga, tantra, ethics, and devotion in roughly 3,000 Tamil verses. It is the tenth book of the Tirumurai canon.

    Content

The poem is arranged in nine tantras. It teaches the five-letter mantra (namashivaya), the eight-limbed yoga adapted to Tamil idiom, the anatomy of the subtle body, temple ritual, and the theology of Shiva as love: “the ignorant say love and Shiva are two; none know that love is Shiva” (anbe sivam). Its lines on breath — the counting of prana as wealth — made it the common inheritance of Siddha medicine/siddha) medicine and yoga alike.

    Significance

The Tirumantiram stands at the head of the Tamil Shaiva textual tradition, bridging Vedic and Siddha worlds. Its yoga chapters are among the earliest detailed Tamil descriptions of pranayama and kundalini practice.
