Kallazhagar Temple, Thirumaliruncholai — Divya Desam

The Kallazhagar Temple at Thirumaliruncholai, in the hills near Madurai, is one of the 108 Divya Desams. It is closely associated with the Alagar Koil temple but is traditionally counted as a distinct Divya Desam in the Alvars’ hymns.

    Background

Thirumaliruncholai (meaning “the beautiful bamboo grove”) is a sacred hill site in the Alagar Hills near Madurai. The temple here is dedicated to Vishnu as Kallazhagar and is closely linked with the Alagar Koil temple, though the two are traditionally distinguished as separate sacred spots. The site’s natural beauty — bamboo groves, hills, and streams — made it a favored location for contemplative devotion. The Alvars, particularly Thirumangai Alvar, sang hymns praising the deity at this location. The Nayak period saw significant temple construction and endowment in the area.

    Spiritual Significance

The Divya Prabandham contains references to Thirumaliruncholai as a distinct sacred site. The Alvars’ hymns celebrate the natural beauty of the setting as a manifestation of divine grace, linking the landscape to Vaishnava theology. The bamboo groves and hills are described in terms that evoke Vaikuntha, Vishnu’s celestial abode. The temple’s significance lies in its integration of natural beauty with devotional practice — the experience of the divine through the landscape itself.

    Architecture

The temple follows Dravidian architectural principles, with a gopuram and sanctum housing the deity. The natural hillside setting distinguishes it from the plains temples, with the architecture partially integrated into the landscape. The mandapams and subsidiary shrines follow standard Dravidian plans, and the temple’s elevated position offers views of the surrounding countryside.

    Present Day

The temple is managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and continues as an active place of worship. It is typically visited in conjunction with the Alagar Koil temple, and devotees who tour both sites experience the complementary aspects of Kallazhagar’s worship. The natural setting remains a draw for pilgrims seeking a contemplative atmosphere.
