    Tirukkural

The Tirukkural (“Sacred Couplets”) is the Tamil classic on virtue, wealth, and love, attributed to Thiruvalluvar. It is among the most translated works of Indian literature.

    Content

The text comprises 1,330 couplets (kurals) of seven feet each, organized into 133 chapters of ten couplets, grouped in three books: aram (virtue), porul (wealth and statecraft), and inbam (love). Its maxims are deliberately non-sectarian — the author invokes virtue, not a named god — which has allowed the Kural to be claimed by Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Christian readers alike.

    Significance

The Kural is the moral reference of Tamil culture: quoted in schools, legislatures, and daily speech. Its distich form influenced later didactic literature, and its translations (into Latin, English, and dozens of languages since the 18th century) made it Tamil’s ambassador text. Gandhi called it “a textbook of indispensable authority.”

    Verification notes

    • Authorship is traditional; almost no biographical or chronological information about Thiruvalluvar is authentic, and the dating debate spans nearly a millennium.
    • Audited against Wikipedia (September 2026).
