History and Legend
Thrissur gets its name from “Sri Siva Perumal Kshetra” (shortened to Thrissur). The Vadakkunnathan Temple is believed to have been founded by Parasurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. The city’s prominence grew under the Zamorin of Calicut and later the Cochin Royal Family. The famous Thrissur Pooram was established in 1797 by the ruler of Cochin to bring together ten temples around the Vadakkunnathan Temple for a grand festival. The city has been a center of Kerala’s cultural renaissance, with institutions like the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Kerala Lalithakala Akademi headquartered here.
Architecture and Features
The Vadakkunnathan Temple is a classic example of Kerala temple architecture with its conical roofed sanctum, wooden carvings, and murals depicting the Mahabharata. The Thrissur Pooram features a spectacular display of caparisoned elephants, traditional percussion ensembles (Panchavadyam and Chenda Melam), and the famous Kudamattam (parasol exchange). The Archaeological Museum, Shakthan Thampuran Palace, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Rosary (a 16th-century Portuguese church) are other notable structures. The Thekkinkadu Maidan (ground) is the central venue for the Pooram festival.
Modern Status

The Thrissur Pooram attracts over a million visitors annually and is one of the most photographed festivals in India.
