    Thokkanam

Thokkanam is Siddha medicine’s therapeutic massage — the nine traditional techniques (classification of percussion, kneading, and pressure manipulations) used with varmam pointwork and medicated oils to treat musculoskeletal, neurological, and trauma conditions.

    Origins

Thokkanam belongs with varmam in the Tamil Siddha corpus — the martial-medical art taught in the kalari and Siddha lineages; the government Siddha system’s textbooks codify its nine techniques (thadal — stroking, izhai — kneading; the named manipulations: stroking, kneading, grasping, pressing, tapping among them).

    Methodology

Diagnosis (envagai thervu, including pulse) determines point and technique; sessions apply the named manipulations with sesame-based or herbal oils over courses of days. Indications in practice: vata-type joint disorders (azhal keelvayu — the Tamil correlate of arthritis), paralysis rehabilitation, sports and martial injury.

    Modern status

Practiced in Tamil Nadu’s Siddha hospitals and by recognized varmam therapists; research literature is small but growing (piloted studies in osteoarthritis and stroke rehabilitation), and the Tamil Nadu Siddha curriculum includes it as a formal clinical skill.

    Verification notes

    • The nine-technique classification follows the Siddha system’s own codification.
