    Thiruvilakku Puja

Thiruvilakku Puja (திருவிளக்கு பூஜை) is the ritual worship of the sacred lamp (vilakku) in Tamil Hindu tradition. It is performed daily in temples and homes as an essential act of devotion, symbolizing the removal of ignorance and the invocation of divine light.

    Overview

Thiruvilakku Puja is a daily ritual practiced in Tamil Nadu and other South Indian communities. The vilakku (lamp) is considered a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi and the divine light that dispels darkness and ignorance. The ritual involves lighting the lamp with ghee or oil, offering prayers, and performing circumambulation. It is performed in the evening as part of the daily worship (nitya puja) in both temples and homes. The practice is described in the Agamas and is an integral part of Tamil Hindu devotional life.

    Method

The practitioner cleans the puja area and places the vilakku (lamp) on a clean surface. The lamp is filled with ghee or sesame oil and lit while chanting mantras invoking the presence of the divine. The practitioner offers flowers, incense, and prayers while the lamp is burning. The lamp is then circled with incense (dhoopam) and a camphor flame (deepam), and the practitioner performs pradakshina (circumambulation) of the lamp. The ritual concludes with the offering of naivedya (food) and the singing of devotional songs.
