    Tejas (Digestive Fire)

Tejas is the subtle essence of the fire element in Ayurveda, representing the body’s transformative and metabolic fire.

    Overview

Tejas is the subtle counterpart of pitta dosha, governing digestion, metabolism, body temperature, and the capacity for transformation. It is not merely physical heat but the subtle luminosity that gives rise to intelligence, courage, and discernment.

    Philosophical Context

Tejas represents the principle of transformation and illumination in Ayurvedic physiology. Philosophically, it connects the physical processes of digestion and metabolism to the mental processes of understanding and insight. When balanced, tejas provides warmth, courage, sharp intellect, and strong digestion. When imbalanced, it manifests as excessive heat, inflammation, anger, or burnout. Tejas is considered the inner fire that transforms food into energy, sensory impressions into knowledge, and ignorance into wisdom.

    Interpretations

Some traditions distinguish between physical tejas (digestive fire) and spiritual tejas (inner radiance). Others emphasize the connection between tejas and the manipura chakra. The regulation of tejas through diet, lifestyle, and herbal preparations is central to Ayurvedic treatment of pitta-type disorders. Cooling practices, bitter and sweet tastes, and moon energy are recommended to balance excess tejas.
