    Tarot

Tarot is a system of symbolic card divination originating in 15th-century Europe, later adopted and adapted by Western esoteric traditions including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Thelema, and contemporary New Age spirituality. The standard deck comprises 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana representing archetypal forces and 56 Minor Arcana organized into four suits.

In Indian esoteric contexts, Tarot has been syncretically integrated with local divination practices, sometimes mapped onto Navagraha correspondences or combined with Jyotiṣa consultations. The Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909) and Thoth Tarot (1969) remain the most widely used systems.

    Origins

Tarot cards evolved from playing cards introduced to Europe via the Islamic world in the 14th century. Esoteric interpretation began in the 18th century with Court de Gébelin’s speculative origins theory, followed by Éliphas Lévi’s Kabbalistic correspondences. The modern occult Tarot crystallized through the Golden Dawn’s systematic attributions.

    Practice/Methodology

Readings employ various spreads—Celtic Cross, Three-Card, and others—where card positions assign contextual meaning. The reader interprets symbolic imagery through established correspondences (elements, planets, Hebrew letters) while integrating intuitive impressions. Reversed cards carry modified or inverted meanings.

    Modern status

Tarot has experienced massive popularization through social media and self-help culture. Professional readers operate globally, and indie deck creation flourishes. Academic study treats Tarot as a lens for examining Western esoteric history rather than as a valid predictive system.

    Verification notes

No empirical evidence supports Tarot’s divinatory efficacy. Psychological research suggests that readings function through cold reading techniques, the Barnum effect, and confirmation bias. The cards’ symbolic richness makes them valuable as meditative and reflective tools regardless of predictive claims.
