    Tara (Buddhist)

Tara is a female bodhisattva and deity in Vajrayana Buddhism, embodying compassion and enlightened activity.

    Overview

Tara is one of the most important female deities in Vajrayana Buddhism, regarded as the “mother of all Buddhas” and the embodiment of enlightened compassion. She manifests in 21 major forms, with Green Tara and White Tara being the most widely worshipped. Tara is believed to have been born from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.

    Method/Content

Tara worship involves the recitation of the 21 Tara praises, specific mantras (primarily “Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha”), and meditation on her form. Rituals include the offering of flowers, incense, and butter lamps, as well as the creation of sand mandalas. Tara practice includes both the peaceful and wrathful forms, each addressing different spiritual needs.

    Purpose/Benefits

Tara worship is believed to provide protection from the eight great fears, remove obstacles, and grant swift spiritual progress. She is invoked for safe journeys, healing, and the removal of negative karma. The tradition holds that her practice is particularly effective in the current age of degeneration.
